What is AWS Class ER 218 Welding Wire?

The AWS Class ER218 welding wire is mainly made up of chromium (20–21%), nickel (11–13%), molybdenum (2–3%), and nitrogen, all with low carbon content to boost corrosion resistance and reduce carbide precipitation. It also contains manganese and silicon to aid in deoxidation and control the weld pool. Typically, the weld metal shows tensile strength ranging from 85,000 to 95,000 psi (590 to 655 MPa), along with good ductility and impact toughness. ER218 is particularly effective against pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in environments with chlorides. It creates smooth weld beads, minimizes spatter, and maintains reliable mechanical properties across various welding positions.
